Dew Drops, Reposted (aka – Lessons Learned in Database Backups)

FAIL

Howdy, folks. As some of you who follow me on Twitter already know, one of my web host’s MySql database servers crashed yesterday afternoon. It happened to be the server hosting this blog’s database. They finally got it back up today, but I guess they don’t perform daily backups because I’m missing three days of data.

I have re-posted the three missing Dew Drop posts, so if you’re seeing duplicates in your RSS reader, that is the reason. Thanks to Dave Ward for suggesting the WP-DBManager plug-in to handle WordPress backups. I’ll be installing and configuring that tonight.

The moral of the story is… don’t count on somebody else to backup your data, even if you thought you were paying them to do so.

Visual Studio Team Data and Team Developer SKUs to Merge

One thing I took away from Dan Fernandez’ interview of Norman Guadagno, which can be found here, is that Microsoft is merging the Team Data (aka Data Dude) feature set into the Team Developer edition. This applies not only to Visual Studio 2010, but also Visual Studio 2008 Team Developer Edition. This updated 2008 SKU will be available to MSDN subscribers on October 1st. This seems like pretty big news to me, but I haven’t seen a lot of fanfare around it yet.

There is a lot of really great preliminary info about Visual Studio 2010 in Dan’s interview. I suggest you check it out.
